Fertilizer Friday /Flaunt Your Flowers Oct2/09

Welcome to the first October edition of Fertilizer Friday! For me this means getting to share the last of the blooms in my garden. I live in a zone 3 area and for the last two nights we have had what is known as a killing frost. This means that almost all of my gardens are completely wiped out!
For the rest of the lucky gardeners that do not have frost or long cold winters, and who are able to simply re-plant for the fall/winter season....get out and feed your flowers...and don't forget those houseplants!!!
Since I have only a few things to share...and this will more than likely end due to the frost falling heavy here, Fertilizer Friday will take a different approach for me over the winter months.
Anyone who has a warm climate, and can still garden, keep things the same way as you have all season long...feed-post-link up and flaunt. For those who live in a cold area (like mine) you can share favorite garden shots from your growing season, or houseplants...or photos that inspire you for the next spring planting!
So? What are we waiting for? Lets Flaunt our flowers and Tour the rest!
My "garbage pot" - funny how it is one of the only things that survived the frost! lol
My Mums still look okay...a little ragged from the recent high winds...but still vibrant in bloom.
The front yard side bed was lucky to be under the window...so it is not frost killed as bad...but the wind did not spare this area and many of the Malva have fallen onto each other.
Pretty Pink Geranium...saved by the overhang on the window.
Coral Geranium saved too.
My Hydrangea seems to have gotten a miracle! No real frost damage yet.
I wish I could make summer last longer here...these are so pretty when they mature!
That's it for me. I plan to share the frost damage ...it's not pretty here at all anymore. Fall in Alberta is a challenge for gardeners who love their annuals!
Please accept this invite to link in and share your blooms and houseplants with us!
To those that link in THANK YOU!

To all who commented and send prayers for our blogging friend Jill....I would like to say thank you and relay a message from her. She is currently safe for now, and she is overwhelmed by the amount of love and support she has received from all of us here in the land of blogging! Keep up the good work friends!

Well what survived the frost still looks beautiful there. I love the hydrangeas. It'll be fun to share our flowers during fall and winter still, it'll help us get through those long months of no gardening. We are safe from frost for awhile still, but there is a lot that needs to be pulled out anyway.

Zone 3, I'll never complain about the cold again. Well can't promise that for sure, because I hate cold weather.

Sorry to hear about your gardens, but love the pictures you posted.

Have a great weekend Toosie.

Four seasons sometimes give my heart a pang as I say farewell to my garden. But then my mind gets full of plans for next year. Superman is even going to try to get as a starter greenhouse (if it works out, we'll spend "real" money on a greenhouse!)

Was going to link, but then started crafting....sorry..you know how that crafting just sweeps you right away from everything around you!!

I agree with you on the lime hydrangea. I am debating whether to pick mine today to do an arrangement for our son's 25th anniversary, or leave them and hope they don't freeze before turning pinkish and mature.

Tootsie,

I am so sorry about your frost. Sometimes we have enough time to get our pots in or cover plants if we know ahead of time. All of your flowers still look like they are thriving...

So you are in zone 3. I am in 5. I wonder a lot now that I blog, what the seasons are really like all over the country. The people in the South talk of winter, yet it never gets really cold, so what IS winter to them?? Do I sound like I have been hitting the bottle?? lol!!

Last weekend I brought in my ferns at the lake. My hubby was in no mmod to move my huge hibiscus and now I am so worried that I may have killed yet another one. We will get up there tonight to see the damage.

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!!

xoxo

Well, I still think it all looks beautiful!

I think as a Deep South Southerner I can address that question from Joan up there about winter in the south. Here's how it works.

We'll have mostly days in the 50s & 60s - which frankly is startin' to get pretty darned cold to us! Then suddenly we will have a series of oh, about 3 days where the temperature plunges to the low 30s - just enough to kill everything. Then in a few days it'll be right back up to the 50s and 60s again for weeks, till another cold front comes through and freezes us out again!

We get maybe 3 of those a winter, but again, it's just enough to kill everything.

That is winter in the south LOL!

The cool overnight temperatures are setting in here in south eastern Ontario, down to +5 celsius. The plants won't last much longer. The wind and rain of the past week has made alot of the plants floppy and I'll have to get out this weekend and pull them or trim them right down if they are perennials. It has been fun participating in Fertilizer Friday.
