Superstars of the Garage Sale World

Hello! How the heck are ya? I am good Thanks!!! (ha-ha)

I mentioned on Friday that I was having a garage sale last weekend…and I did just that. Thurs, Fri, and Sat. What a weekend it was! I was busy all three days…met lots of great people…(some not so nice ones) and gave about a million tours of my garden.

My parents are downsizing a few things from their home…and from my Dad’s junkin’ stash…and I brought a few loads back here to hold a sale of substantial size. For the most part, the sale was filled with beautiful things… collectible things…and hand made things. Then there’s the rest.

Some things sold before I could even get the sale set up…or get a photo. Such things were the treadmill that somehow was left in my mom and dad’s basement to collect dust…I brought it home..sold it for $75 bucks. I didn’t need a cheap one…I have a very good one in my house that I use. (okay mostly dust in the summer)

Let me share a few of my more memorable items with you. The following are items which made a splash in the memories of the sale this weekend. You will note…I have changed the font on my watermark to suit the occasion…hee hee.

Why don’t we begin with this little treat. Yes…this is a Turkey…and Avon Turkey filled with men’s cologne…and YES…it is just about the most embarrassing thing in the whole sale!

Yes Mister Turkey…I’m talkin to you! So many people picked it up…laughed at it and put it back down. One woman even commented how nicely I had set up the garage…that it sort of looked like a store…and that everything in there was so pretty….
then she picked up Mister Turkey…and said “except this! what the heck is this doing in here????” I just smiled…and said…hey…there’s a reason it’s in here!!! ha-ha. Sadly, the turkey is still here…could not even give him away for free…so…he might get to stand on the top of my workbenches in between the garage plants to stand guard, and ward off evil spirits. {8~)

Okay..this photo is LOADED! This was after the first day… the first thing in this photo I will mention is the colorful fake flowers…these were from my girl’s bedrooms. They wanted to get rid of them since we changed the theme…you just do NOT put that much vibrant color in a bedroom for a child with A.D.D! (hey…in my defense…I didn’t know the diagnosis at the time…) Everything from the first two shelves was gone within the first couple hours…

Do you see that light blue vertical stand with the pails on it? The one standing? Don’t look directly at it…it might be cursed! That stupid thing caused NOTHING but trouble since the first moment it was given to my mom. Ya… see it? …well it was among the first things to go. Thank goodness! My mom had said that if it was the last thing I did…to get rid of that awful thing! She hated that thing from the first moment she got it. It was a very controversial item indeed…and it went CHEAP right off the bat! Whew! didn’t want to have to tell her it was still here! (ya…she’s little…but well you know how it is when you get told you are NEVER too old or big to go over someone’s knee…and I don't think Mister Turkey would be able to help me...HI MOM! ) {8~)

Then there’s the crowns. I sold a few…but MAN…did I have to explain to every one of the people in the sale what they were???? Yes…sadly I did. I had to tell how they can be in the garden…or where ever…and that yes…they were crowns! Hello??? do they look like anything else????

Much of the Christmas things were left at the end of the sale…too early to think of Christmas…which was okay…I still liked a lot…just wanted to rid myself of some painful memories…maybe I can re-vamp a few things to make myself some new memories…

Before I tell the tale of the photo above I would like to say that I have absolutely no issue with people of substantial size…or who are very thin…you are who you are….and your size has nothing to do with how I will treat you….But sometimes…size does matter….here’s why:

There is nothing funny about these old school desks…EXCEPT that they caused a lot of people to try to sit in them…including one VERY large woman who tried to sit in one…wedged herself into one of the desks…(only one cheek fit…and her gigantic boobs or belly…couldn’t tell which ‘cuz they seemed to all be part of a series of inner tube type rolls…that didn’t smell so great by the way (it was hot out) …well…those boobs/belly/rolls were sort of sliced in half by the desk top…she managed to get her generously endowed self stuck in the desk…and her husband had to pull her out…Thank Goodness “Busy” had used almost a full can of Pledge funiture polish on each one…they were slippery enough that she managed to finally get out giggling and sweaty…oh…and she did manage to pinch her “bottom cheek” in a crack in the seat! I tried my best not to look…but oh you have no idea how hard it was not to send my kids out there to “casually” take some photos!

How can some people NOT realize that they are not little…and that they do NOT fit into certain areas??? It sure was funny though. just sayin’

I have 5 of these desks now…and only three kids…my dad had a few kicking around and I got to keep what I wanted of them. Thanks Grampie! {8~)

Check these out! I think these have more sentimental value than anything! These are my Dad’s old ski boots. Not only do they weigh about 5 tonnes…they are super stiff. As kids my sister and I used to wear them around the basement when we played different things…At the sale, one kid asked if they were from the movie transformers…and another man…nearly laughed himself silly at how heavy they are…and old! Not just that…how good of shape they are in! Near perfect…only worn one time.

During that one time about 40 years ago…(according to Grammie) My dad and her two brothers got the bright idea to go skiing. They were so excited! They WAXED and WAXED and WAXED some more on their skiis the night before…so excited…could hardly wait! The next morning, they all got up, suited and geared and primped up…headed for the bunny hill to take a few practice runs, and strut their stuff…only to find that they had over Waxed their skiis…and were stuck to whatever surface they touched…including the snow….ice and ski hill!!! I bet they could have scaled a glass building without ropes! I nearly cried when I heard that story…just imagining my Dad …hee hee…wonder if he was wearing plaid pants that day…and if he had his hair done like one of the Beetles…Oh the hilarity of the whole mental picture! (luv you Daddy!!!??? {8~)

The baby buggy…and bassinet…kind of dated a lot of us…and in the end I could not part with it yet. I am hoping a girlfriend will hurry up and have a baby…she wants to use it. It is in perfect condition…even has the bug net and weather cover. I love this old buggy…it has so much charm.

So what else did I sell?

some old ornaments…they creep me out…

some bunk beds…20 hanging baskets of petunias…

nick nacks…an unwanted wire tea pot… that dresser in the background went right away! You remember the one I fixed up? Wait till you see what I replaced it with!!!

There was everything from garden tools…to christmas decor…tupperware, dining set, living room furniture…thew whole kit and kabootle…

I did have a few things left…but sold a lot…mostly mom and dad’s items…which was fine….I am partial to much of my things…and always end up looking back and wishing I had hoarded it. haha.

Over all I had an absolute Blast with my garage sale…I can’t wait to do it again…mom and dad are still downsizing, and a couple friends are sending stuff to put in…and I have a few things left over…so it will happen later in the summer…

I had people commenting that it was set up like a store…displayed…clean and very organized…I must have been reading a few blogs that feature beautiful flea market booths…Oh how I wish I could visit those!!!

I was pooped and took part of the next day off…I will be back in a day or two to show you what I have been up to in the garden dept…I am making a planter like NO other…(if it works) and I am excited to share it. I have been quite sick with respiratory issues and much nose blowing…so I am a bit slower than normal this week…bare with me!

Thanks for the “inventory” Grammie and Grampie, Bobbi and everyone else who contributed to a very fun weekend!

until then…Hugs…smiles and a special wink or three *) *) *) to those three biggest fans…you know who you are!

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your garage sale and the stories behind some of the stuff. You made me laugh, too.
Glad it went well for you.

Tootsie, what a sale! I am not good at garage sales. For years, I bought great furniture and collectables at garage and house sales. The sales I held never yeilded much in profits. It sounds like yours was a winner!

I have one of those desks that I use for my sewing machine. I can still fit in it - ha, ha!

Yours was the kind of garage sale I would drag myself to if I was dying! Wow! :)

Having a garage sale is hard work! I helped my husband get one together a couple of weeks ago. I GO to yard sales, i don't have them! You did a good job!

We have only had one garage sale and the items we thought no one would ever buy went first and we were left with some of the better things.
Who knows what people are thinking.

I hate that I wasn't close enough to attend the GS and Yard Tour.

Wow, that's a lot of stuff. It sounds like it was a very good sale.

Luv the post. Get some rest and get well soon.

Toosie you are too funny! I had to laugh at the precious lil' turkey guy and the curse. LOL!

The crown story is hilarious. You are right what else did they look like? HA! *Smiles*

Holy crap! Now that's what I call a GOOD garage sale! You nearly had me wetting myself reading about the fat lady getting stuck in the school desk. One look at those things and the first thing I thought was, "No way could I fit in one of those." ROFL at Busy having them all polished so the woman could squeak her way out. Holy shit, if only you had pictures!

I also loved the story of your dad's adventure in NOT skiing.

Fabulous post, Glenda. Now tell me, how much $$$ did you make?

Justine :o )
