Fertilizer Friday/ Flaunt Your Flowers July 16/10

Copy_of_001

Hello Bloggers/ Gardeners/ Friends!!!! It’s Friday again already and that means it’s time to flaunt our flowers, gardens and all things green!

Now if you are not familiar with the rules of this little party…here they are;

If it is spring or summer where you live, you need to snap a few photos of what you have growing, blooming or just love to look at that is of the plant variety…if it is winter where you live, you may post past favorite photos…or indoor plants…whatever you like. The only criteria is that it is a plant or something growing!

You do not need to use fertilizer to participate in this party, but if you do, this is the reminder to fertilize weekly!

Your post must include the logo above and a link to Tootise Time, or the linky will be deleted. I don’t mean to be harsh, but there have been a lot of people linking in and when the participants graciously click over to their blogs, there is no sign of Fertilizer Friday anywhere to be found. This is not fair to those who do follow the rules, therefore…well you know!

So? what are you waiting for? Get outside, feed, water, snap and post!

This week in Alberta Canada..we had some adverse weather. (big surprise hey? lol) This weather system dropped temps very low and high winds brought us over 7 inches of rain in two days. We won’t even get into the thunder etc…My gardens took a beating…so this week I will share the good and the bad.

023

The good is that these passion flower buds…

014

Have begun to OPEN!!! LOOK at the intricate pattern of flower parts!!! Just stunning all on it’s own!

038

The bad is that the rain came down so hard some times…that it did a real number on my flowers that were doing so very well….

039

It rained so hard at times that it ripped tiny holes in the petunia petals…and some of them are just destroyed!

040

It ripped the blooms right off the honeysuckle…

078

crushed the tiger lilies to a flat mess.

It will be a week or more before all the plants recover. I am lucky I always plant the flowers that come back in the event of a natural disaster like heavy rain, winds..or basket balls….

043

I shared that I was planning an addition to the garden room last week..so here it is!

044

I thought that every room has a doorway…so I made one!

045

I dug it right into the ground..and put the stones back on top. It is anchored with long spikes too. High wind is no stranger in this garden, and it will need all the anchoring it can get. (especially after I plant something to climb around on it!

104

I like it.

062

…from the inside…not bad for a free trellis!

052

The header bed is filling in… I can’t wait till the snap dragons mature and bloom!

054

The same bed…from inside the greenhouse.

057

My JackmanII clematis is blooming! LOOK at all the buds!!!!

058

I sort of wish it was a brighter color…but hey…gardeners can’t be choosers…or can we??? Hee Hee!

061

Picket bench is filling in.

063

Hedge is full and the grass is green.

064

Lavatera is starting to grow…but it is still WAY behind what it should be. Last year it touched almost to the top of the garage…I’m a bit disappointed.

072

When I am disappointed in the back…I just come out front and look at the huge display the Engleman’s Ivy is putting on this year! It has enveloped the window box on the railing! I love this vine…I often think about planting it all over the place to hide the fence completely. Maybe one day I just will!

075

A Rose bush bought for the breast cancer fund…

084

Oh I LOVE this color!!! Rudbeckia.

095

Dahlia.

096

Rudbeckia again…

098

Gerber Daisy.

100

Dahlia .

102

Osteospermum…they are not quite so orange…more of a coral orange…but hey…I am a gardener…not a photographer! heh heh.

And now that I have flaunted…it is your turn!!! Please join me…I love to see what you guys have growing!

I hope mister linky works this week…last week was a nightmare! Thanks to you guys who hung in there and flaunted in spite of the glitches!

Until next time…I just wish you a happy and safe weekend…and to those 3 who ‘love’ me so…winks!!! *) *) *)

See you all next week!
Tootsie!

Wow! Your yard and gardens look amazing to spite the heavy rain. I bought lavatera this year because I loved how nice it looked in your garden. I have to say that is one pretty plant. I am sorry it's behind for you this year. mine is doing pretty good, I guess since I haven't ever grown it before. That is a very rewarding plant. I will be sure to get a lot more of that next year. YOur clematis is gorgeous. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Tootsie... you do so many wonderful annuals and hanging baskets... I need help! Every year my 14" baskets of petunias eventually get somewhat chlorotic (we have extremely hard water which is quite alkaline)...This year is worse than ever with all the rain... It's driving me nuts and I'm about ready to trash them all and never do another basket again!! After all, it's only mid- July!! When I think of the investment in all these surfinia petunias, it makes me almost ill. I suppose the only answer is major haircuts and lots of fertilizer... have you discovered any products than can bring the color back to the foliage? One year I used copperas which I use with my magnolias, and killed all the petunias. I presume that the use of Osmocote three month slow release was simply not enough fertilization. Any ideas on how to salvage this sitution Tootsie? I appreciate it... Thanks, Larry

Hey Tootsie! For someone who is not a photographer, your pic of the blooming passion flower is fantastic! Super Kudos! Nice job on the trellis, looks fantastic. Keep on flaunting :) Have a great week!

hey Larry! funny you should mention your issues to me...I am having the same problem for the last couple of years too! Never before did I come upon issues growing a petunia basket like I have this year. Most of my hanging pots are ready for the junk!
I did do a little research last week...and I have found that they are lacking in nitrogen or iron! I generally use miracle gro but I might have to head out and look for something with a higher nitrogen level. I have given several of my pots a serious haircut and they seem to be bouncing back all bushy, but they are WAY behind the others and look out of place. It seems it is a crap shoot with these things this last year or two.

It also might be caused by poor drainage. I did pick up a few new pots this year with different bottoms on them. They seem to never dry out and I suspect root rot is taking over.
I hope you will keep in touch as to any progress you have...as will I.
I also never in a million years suspected you had any issues at all...your gardens are just breathtaking...I wish on wishes that I could have that kind of space to garden in...and ...that I could walk your beautiful gardens in person...what a delight for the senses that would be!

Your garden is so awesome and immaculate. I love looking at your pictures and reading your blog. I must admit I am ashamed of all of my weeds, etc. after seeing such a beautiful yard such as yours. Thanks for hosting Fertilizer Friday - it puts a smile on my face!

What a shame the rains did damage some of your beautiful blooms. Still, your garden is looking stunning ... how I wish I had garden beds like yours. The header bed is just stunning ... as are all your potted plants. Love your new trellis ... that area is wonderful.

Tootsie, even though you have had some damage your garden looks lovely. I have had some weather damage and also the yellowing and demise of some of my baskets. I do use a super bloom formula that used to be made by several companies (Peters, Schultz and Vigaro). However, this year I was told they are no longer in business, at least for this product. I did find some at a local nursery under their own label. It is a 10-50-10 formula, will give them a dose today. I think all of the rain we have had leached all the nutrients out of the soil.

Wow, so many beautiful blooms to flaunt this week. The addition of the trellis is great, can't wait to see what you decide to grow up it. The passion flower is certainly unique in its looks. Have a great weekend.

Hi Tootsie! Your garden looks amazing, even after all the rain. We had some mighty rain here in the Maritimes as well. And my petunias look like yours. But I deadhead, and in a week or so, they'll be great looking again.

I love the Gerber Daisy. I planted some but they've not bloomed to date. Next year??

Tootsie, There's lots to love in your garden! Especially the passion flower - wow! I really love your new arbor, too. Your picket bench looks great. Your garden is fabulous despite the setbacks caused by the weather. Hope all is well with you.
Blessings, Beth

Regardless of your crazy weather your plants look good. I don't like it when my petunia blooms get mushy either. Love your new arbor door. I have to get that clematis!!

Your garden is so lush!! And I didn't realize there were different kinds of Passion Flowers. I love them.

The trellis looks great!
You still have tons of flowers. Sorry about the weather. Sometimes, plants need a good scrubbing though.

Wow! I just adore all the vivid colors you have in your yard, Glenda. One of my favorite areas of yours is that sweet bench surrounded with all those pretty flowers. We have had very hard rains and winds that are causing some things in our yard to look pretty bad too.

Thanks for another FF Friday! :)

Love the new "doorway". The passion flower is amazing in it's intricate design!! Your ivy on the front porch is really all encompassing, our trumpet vine does the same for us on the back deck. We're a little careful to keep it off the house or it would be all over the roof. Beautiful flowers as usual and your photography is nothing to be sneezed at.

I adore your yard. I love the way you use your annual plants, they all look so healthy and happy. You have inspired me to put in more annuals next year!!! And I love the 'passiflora'. I have seeds wonder if I should pot up and stick in little greenhouse? Well, thanks for your blog and fertilizer friday. Your a 'Hoot'.

Hey girlfriend how are things in your part of flowering! As always your place is so stunning and beautiful. I took a few minutes to stop over, not blogging much with all that is going on. Hope all is well with you Toots.

I need you here for just a week or two to fix the mess I've gotten into this summer. My garden is just "nasty". Beautiful!

Larry said...

Hey Tootsie... this is Larry again... well, I took some action on the petunia baskets... I combined Osmocote slow release fertilizer, Encap fast acting Iron, and a very high phosphate blooming formula of quick action fertilizer... I added a good handfull to each hanging pot and watered in well. The only part that scares me is the last ingrediant as it can sometimes burn... we shall see. The worse looking baskets will be put in the greenhouse to rejuvinate after a haircut. My experience is that they may come back very nicely, or they may die off totally. I'll let youi know what happens! Larry

So jealous, never could grow clematis and yours is so lush. Your talent never fails to amaze me, which I had a big of it and could build myself a trellis. I am still a bit under the weather but I think I am gaining. At least I hope so!

I hope your flowers perk up after the heavy rain. Your sure have lots looking beautiful. Your yard looks awesome in the dark, too. I didn't get all of that post read, but saw something about bats.

I'm up late. I just got home after 10:00 central time from helping my daughter clean her place. I need to get myself to bed.

Oh, I love that arbor you made. You rock!
