The Cowboy Cupboard

Hey! It’s been a while since I shared anything other than garden related projects, and I thought it was about time I got busy!

So, I had this old cupboard standing in the garden shed. It was there when we moved in, and it wasn’t in good shape at all. I had looked it over once very quickly during a major clean out/purge session, and decided that it needed to go to the trash. ( you know it was bad if I say it’s garbage! ha ha) Alas, it was loaded up, and hauled away, but as luck would have it, the dump was closed…thus, the ugly cupboard ended up sitting in a cowboy’s garage. (until we could catch the dump when it was open)

Now, this cabinet was absolutely slated for the trash…the only reason it didn’t make it there, was that in a small town, the dump is only open certain days, AND at specific times. If it had not been for that schedule…well…a cowboy would not have a cupboard designed by Tootsie.

The story goes something like this:

One day I was in the cowboy’s garage while my son mowed his lawn…I got to looking at that old cupboard…and ended up thinking that I could use a little challenge. It had been months since I had given myself a paint hangover…had any fun playing with paint…so I mentioned that I might be able to play with it just enough that it would look okay.

Lucky for me (and the cupboard) the cowboy took me up on the offer.

This is the before shot of the outside front of the cupboard. There is a hole in the top of the left door…and it is just plain run down. Nothing pretty about it at all.

DSCN4160

A shot of the inside of the cupboard…EWE!!

DSCN4163

Side view!! A little shabby…not as bad as the inside! haha!

This is the top.

I got to work:

I wiped it down…scuffed it with a little sand paper…and wiped it down again.

Now for the fun part. I grabbed a few of my favorite colors of stain to work with… and got down to playin!

I primed it.

DSCN4170

I wiped it over with Dark Walnut stain…I didn’t like it….it needed MORE…

DSCN4174

I then rubbed a little black….and then a little red mahogany, and a little more black…

DSCN4220

…and then some teak …

DSCN4191

…and finally a little bit of black paint to touch and accent the piece!

DSCN4201

I think I am done! …well the body anyways…this cupboard is not done…not by a long shot!!!

DSCN4203

Remember that awful blemish on the door??? Well, it didn’t disappear…we didn’t repair it…and it is very obviously screaming out for attention.

NO PROBLEM! I have the exact thing to help hide that blemish!

DSCN4806

The kids had given the cowboy this little plaque for a joke one day…it isn’t all that big…and I think it looks pretty good over that spot…don’t you?

A little wood glue and it is good as done!

DSCN4807

I quite like it there…and so does the cowboy.

It looks like we are finished with this project doesn’t it? Well we are far from done!!!

DSCN4160

Remember this eyesore?????

I first gave it a very good scrubbing…then I painted on three coats of primer to make sure all the “ick” was sealed in…and then gave it a coat of medium gray oil based paint. I let it dry and decided I hated the plain old paint look…it just did not suit the style of this cupboard…it needed a little “something”…

DSCN4803

…so I grabbed the dark walnut stain and I washed it on lightly over the gray paint.

DSCN4802

It aged it just enough to make it look perfect!!!

DSCN4815

Now…do you think I am finished????

Ha-ha!!! You know me WAY to well!!! Of course I’m not done!

There is still the matter of the inside of that door with the blemish on it!

Have no fear…Tootsie has another solution!

DSCN4827

Yep!!! The cowboy liked the little cartoon that was originally taped to the inside of the cupboard door…and since it was already laminated…I used it! (Damn I am good!!! I should start wearing a cape!) Oops…did I say that out loud??? ha ha!

DSCN4826

Perfect!

And…NOW I am done! *)

All of this took me about 8 hours to do…(it was spread out over three days to allow paint to dry) …and was a lot of fun for me. I sure do miss playing with paint and fixing up old junk…so this was a great time for me.

I am glad to have had the second chance to save that old cupboard…and I am even gladder that the cowboy likes the way I play with paint…He loves his new big old cupboard. I believe he said he planned to use it in a special place in the near future. (but that is a whole other post…just waiting to happen)

There you have it folks…the story of the cupboard that narrowly escaped the dump AND went from ugly, old and drab…

DSCN4159

…to Tootsie-fied cowboy chic and fab!!what..I had to make it rhyme!!!)

DSCN4805

That’s it for me for today!!! Thanks for popping in and seeing what I have been up to!!! I hope you will stop again soon.

Don’t forget to join me right back here for the big Fertilizer Friday Flaunt!!!

Until Next Time…Happy Junkin’!

You are so inpsiring! And creative ♥ Once things are "done" if that ever happens, I'm going to have to get brave with a lot of oldies. I know just where to come to be inspired and get some guts! LOL

Thanks so much for your sweet response. I'm still hanging...by a nail or two ;)
