Have you seen Bonney Lassie's gambion baskets filled with stones that form columns in her garden? Good idea to add greens and any berry branches etc to your window boxes. Colonial Williamsburg has some directions for preserving foliage.

I found some conifers that are claimed to be hardy in zone 3 that you might plant in more sheltered areas. Snow will break up evergreens but if you had a little bit of shelter like a pergola?

Even here the dead of winter can be kind of dreary when the deciduous trees lose their leaves, but it's a short winter. We still plant evergreens for color. I would have to have something or go live in the greenhouse.

I would be tempted to use faux evergreens in the window boxes. People here do it all the time.

I know you'll find a way. How about putting a couple of barrels in that front bed with interesting branches and greens. Put a big bow on it for christmas and select branches you could hang ornaments on....I know you can "tootsify" that area to welcome visitors to the house...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03969531374002650234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4476624473421483512.post-86562632918365053812013-10-18T05:16:47.235-06:002013-10-18T05:16:47.235-06:00Glenda, ferry funny story on the other blog.

I remember the lush, colorful, happy flowers and the time and work that went in producing them. Oh if i am in your conditions, i might not be gardening anymore, as it is always so sad when they go. If only you are in a subtropical setting, maybe your efforts will be better rewarded of longer lives of your plants. Whenever I've done winter pots I scavenge what I can. Pine and cedar boughs, red twig dogwood, sumac and other seed heads and pinecones. Everything has to be sturdy enough for a heavy snowfall on top of it. Good luck with what you decide to do.Judith @ Lavender Cottagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16361061491506137380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4476624473421483512.post-72951540552975325712013-10-17T19:39:50.425-06:002013-10-17T19:39:50.425-06:00Hi Glenda, I love your autumn wreath; your nice gr...Hi Glenda, I love your autumn wreath; your nice green lawn still looks pretty. I sense your angst as winter looms! We are still having nice weather, although on the cool side. Good luck with your window boxes - and here's an idea: go to a Christmas tree place and see if they will give you some of the cut off greens. Then, add some faux poinsettias.
