Grabbing Inspiration, and making it My Own.

I’mmm Ba-ak!!! hee hee…and I have more to share! Proof of why I have not been around bugging you all….Remember the settee that I posted last week?

Well she came with friends!

050

Yep…these two teensy ladies were in the deal. Two very petite chairs. I think Gloria said they were game chairs, and they should have had a small table between them for a chess board or something. Well, sad for me that there is no table…(I’ll fix that one day too…) but lucky for me that there is not one…but TWO chairs for me to play with. I know, I know…enough chit chat…lets get to the nitty gritty…What on earth does a Tootsie do with two such chairs?028

Well, first she digs out the inspiration photo of the most fantastic chair she has ever seen…and has wanted to try since seeing it…These chairs will be perfect for practice.

003

Next, she whips out the black paint…gives them both two coats…and rubs a little off here and there for charm.

004

Loving the details when painted black...

005

It sort of hides the damage that someone did a shabby repair job on…but not to worry….I have a plan!

I whipped out a chocolate brown twin bed flat sheet….my staple gun and got busy…(no not the lovely assistant ‘Busy’-she was in bed-ha-ha) the working kind of busy!

Cutting, stapling and pleating the bed sheet into a pretty new dress for the chairs.

092

A couple of hours later…this is what I had!

Now when you do this treatment, you will end up with a LOT of staples…so how on earth did I hide them all? You guessed it!!! I used twisted nylon rope from the hardware store again…only this time I did not paint it…I tea stained it!

097

Yes I did!!! I tea stained and glued on my trusty nylon rope…did a nice big border all the way around.

096

Now keep in mind, that I have zero photography skills and some of the following photos are proof of that…

063

A view from the back…(in the wrong setting)

091

A view from the front (looks a little more like it should –the rope is not really that bright…but this is the best I could get from my camera tonight. Where did I put them?

087

For the time being, they are sitting in the living room/dining room area. I faced one into the dining area, and one into the living room…with a pedestal between them.

105

I put this bust on the pedestal. She goes well with the smaller bust on the trunk/coffee table in the living room.

014

Another view of the living room.

066

And another look at the chairs…

008

And yet another…can you tell I like them? ha-ha

So? what do you think? I love the pleated look….and I didn’t want to steal the entire inspiration…so I put a little Tootsie Twist on it! You like?

Guys, I have been completely overwhelmed as of late. I do a lot of projects late late at night when sleep won’t come. I am trying to get around to visit you all and see what you are sharing. I will eventually…but wanted to thank you for standing by me during a difficult time in my life, and for being so kind in your comments. You can’t ever know how grateful I am for the fellowship. When the up close and in person friends are all gone to their own homes, you guys are always here hanging out with me!

On that sappy sorry slobbery note…I will say thanks for stopping in…stay tuned for the next installment of Tootsie’s late night decorating! (or Fertilizer Friday---which ever comes first! Ha!)

I Don’t Do Windows! Or Do I?…

So I had an encounter with the King of Junk . Yes…Yes I did! It was a very prosperous day here for this Toots. I was one lucky girl this time…A full load arrived. Yes…DELIVERED right to my door!!! Now there is nothing better than having Junk Delivered!!! I had to contain myself as I was so very excited...I just wanted to dig right in! But alas...I held my composure, and used my manners...until I was alone...then it was ON!

AHHHHHH...sometimes it's good to be of direct decent to the King of Junk and Silliness (and his teeny Queen) ...VERY GOOD INDEED.

Wanna see??? I know you do!

082

Today I am sharing just a teeny bit of what I got. See that BIG window? It is out of an old school house. It has 18 window panes that are approximately 10x13 inches in size! 113

I am in LOVE with old windows.

059

CHECK out the patina on the wood!!! I love the character…

What’s that? Pardon me?

You want to know what I have hanging from the pane?

114

It is a resin scroll of the Lord’s Prayer. I love that piece.

083

I know what you are thinking….”ya cudda washed the windows Toots”

Aren’t ya?

hmmmm….

NO WAY!

084

I love the 'dirt' on them! I did hose them down…outside with a sharp blast of water…I also used a scraper to remove some of the ‘ick’ (okay lets just be honest here…Pigeon Poop) from them. But, for the most part, I like them a bit dirty. (funny thing for a clean freak to say isn't it? lol)

I do plan to hang some greenery from the windows too...I think it needs a little something...will update when I get just the right idea!

041

Did I mention that there are THREE of these beauties???? Yes there are! I love them. I hung the one behind the piano and one of the ones in the front entryway. The third is propped against the wall on an angle.

035

I had to laugh (okay maybe not laugh but I did say a word that made my kids giggle) at the mess I made of my house just trying to decide where to display my windows. What a disaster area this place became. Every little thing about the front entry changed…I added a lamp…light colored accessories…lol…all for a dirty window. haha!

I love the old storm windows. I think they tell a story as they stand. The weather they have endured…the sights they have shared with those who peer through them…

I have several smaller versions of these old storm windows outside that used to be built into my old greenhouse. I may need to make use of them too…!

Isn't a total home make over fun? I have been having a blast re-doing my entire home...just the way I like it. Thrifted, hand made, and unique!

Thanks for tuning in today!!! I have loads of photos to share with you guys. I have been working my little Tootsie fingers to the bone…making new things from old…improving on my own ideas, writing, painting, upholstering, planning and playing in the dirt! I will be a busy girl, posting and sharing this week!

New Old Settee

So…this gorgeous piece of furniture…has been “gifted” to me. I am super excited to give her a make over. Now, don’t get me wrong…the original fabric is ‘lovely’… 058

However, it is simply not me. It is too busy. Is this a problem? NO!!! Not for me! I’ll just change her up!

001 (2)

first I stripped her “naked”…

005 (2)

Then I painted the wood in a black semi-gloss paint. 014

Once the paint dried, (which seemed to take FOREVER) I rubbed over it with a cabernet (red) stain. This gives the carving a bit of definition and softened the black down a touch. (and yes…this took forever to dry…no fun for miss impatient here)012

When it FINALLY dried…I glued a thick layer of batting to the existing foam. (glued my arm to the foam, and my scissors closed too-yep-that’s just the way I roll around here.028

Now the fun began…staples were flying, scissors cutting…and I must say…DULL scissors too…my sharp ones disappeared! But I persevered…and think I won!

010

After I finally got the fabric in place, I opted not to put the tufting back on the back of the settee…Instead I decided to put this fringe on. I have seen pieces done with the bushy fringe and loved the look, so I thought I’d try it. I LOVE IT! I think it kind of makes it a touch less formal.

021

I did have this lovely lady sitting in the sunroom, but now…she sits proudly in the living room of my house. I moved out the red painted one and just traded spots with them! I would not want the sun to fade my pretty new olive green fabric!

023

The photos do not seem to show the true color of the fabric. It is almost a perfect match to the green in the rug in front.

026

Now Gloria over at Happy to Be gave me a bit of a lesson on this piece. It is very low to the ground…and it is very old. She figured it was early 1900’s at least. The low to the ground feature was made to accommodate the ladies in their hoop skirts. (it made sitting a LOT easier) Thank you Gloria! {8-)

027

I think it fits in perfectly with the antique stereo, trunk and sewing machine in here.

…she reminds me so much of Gloria over at Happy To Be….if you have not been over there for a visit yet…you really are missing out…she knows a LOT about antiques…and her home is to die for! I just adore Gloria, she’s my ‘mom’ ya know!

Well, that’s what I did last Friday afternoon and evening.

Think this should keep me covered till Fertilizer Friday??? hahaha!

Hope so…’cause I’ll be in the greenhouse!

How to Paint a Sofa...Fabric and All...

So....there were a lot of comments on my painted furniture that prompted me to do a bit of a how-to and to give a bit of experienced advice here.
I just used regular old latex paint in a satin or a semi-gloss sheen...that way it is a bit wipe-able...since I have kids...washable is a big deal...
I use a bristle brush for the first coat. This helps me get into the cracks and folds and the little nooks and crannies of the fabric.
Speaking of fabric....
~~~~TIP~~~~
your fabric must be of the smooth variety...textures and velvets will not paint as nicely...velvets will clump and become matted and gross...textures will not be as 'leather-ish' in the end...
I also have concluded that the BEST fabric to paint is a cotton blend. It will stay softer than the poly blends that many pieces are upholstered in. The poly blends become a bit stiffer and do not feel as comfortable as the cotton blends. My chair is absolutely soft and feels like soft leather...where as the loveseat is a bit stiffer feeling...I have concluded that it is because of the fabric blend. I don't care right now...I like my loveseat...at least until I find a cotton blend one...hahaha.
Okay...back to the tutorial
Here's me painting the first coat on a cushion. Keep in mind now that I cannot take my own photos...especially if I am painting...so I had to enlist the help of my lovely "assistant" who ....~dazzles~ me daily with her helpfulness and skills...Today...she was ripping around the garage on a scooter...taking action shots and photos of the stupidest things...including the inside of her mouth, a VERY close up of my bum...her brother's nostrils...yea...you get the idea...so...needless to say...the "quality" of the photos may not be what you are expecting...
Yep...an action shot...make sure you get the paint into the seams and all of the exposed areas...
Talk on your cell phone while you paint...did I mention that she was supposed to take photos of the project??? NOT ME!!! (and yes... I am just stunning today...aren't I? haha)
After the first coat of paint has dried...about an hour or so...do not be upset if you can see through it. The paint will have soaked into the fabric a bit. I like to use a microfiber roller for the rest of the coats. It is small and made for doing trim and corners, but it doesn't leave bubbles in the coat...and it is flexible. Foam rollers will leave those little air bubbles...and you will have a lot of sanding between coats.
Between coats it is a good idea to give the project a light sanding with a fine grit sandpaper...wipe lightly and remove all sanding grit...then re-coat. Repeat this process as many times as you need to to give the piece a nice even appearance...and feel.
This is after 3 or 4 coats.
So...you go ahead and give it a final sanding...then, just before you apply the final coat...you decide you HATE that color...and turn around and add a few more coats of a fabulous color of your choice...wait for it to dry...several hours...
Then....you apply a finishing wax to the piece...I didn't like the finishing paste that I found in the hardware store...so I used car wax instead...my small buffer...and....
Ta-DA!!!
Overall...this project took me two days...I had to allow drying time. It cost me no more than a can of paint a thrift store loveseat and some frustration...I am happy with the outcome.
If you have any questions that I did not answer...please...feel free to ask.
I planned to share another fantastic piece...that I have acquired recently, but I could not get the blogger uploader to work...so you will have to wait...
See you back here...for Fertilizer Friday...I have been a busy Tootsie this week...so stay tuned!
