Fertilizer Friday/ Flaunt Your Flowers Dec18/09

Welcome to Fertilizer Friday!!! Today is the day we all get together and flaunt our flowers!
Fertilizer Friday is the day when gardeners from all over the world join in and share the blooms of their labors!
If you are new to this party...WELCOME!!! If you are a regular...WELCOME BACK! Anyone can post plants of any kind...you are all welcome...the more the merrier!
Now...if you are not familiar with the winter rules here...you will be...since I have ZERO to share...my gardens are bare...I (and other gardeners in similar climates) are sharing our favorite photos from months, gardens, years gone by, or the current indoor gardens and houseplants that they have. Those who have real live beauty to share are doing just that!
So? What are we waiting for? Feed your flowers/ houseplants...gardens...snap some photos, link in and Flaunt with me!
This will be the last Fertilizer Friday of 2009. There will be no Dec 25th or Jan 1 postings...have a great holiday!!!
Today I am sharing a few of the plants that are growing in the greenhouse. I am happy to report that although it has been a difficult month in there...things are going well. We had a spider mite attack...an aphid attack, and a few days and nights where it was 40 degrees below freezing. Bugs-dead (for now) (many thanks to Sigrun for the tips)...temps...warming up (for now)
The first photo here is the banana plant that I started from seed this summer. This was the scene in Oct of this year...shortly after I took this photo...I lost all but one leaf to spider mites....well, I'm happy to say that I have won that war...take a look at it now!!!
Yep...it gets a new leaf every other day now...and it is very big...I need almost a whole room for this puppy now...
It kinda looks a little like a jungle in there right now...and it is a HUGE mess...so no full room photos for you this week! lol
It is about 6 feet tall, and almost as wide...
I have NO idea how I will accommodate this plant in my house when planting season hits me...lol But...rest assured....I WILL find a way!
My Mandevilla is doing well...it got an attack of the Aphid variety, but I managed to remedy that really fast too! It is blooming again...and has all kinds of little vines sprouting up and out and all over the place.
The Rose bush...got spider mites...yea...this was not a good year for bugs in the greenhouse...but I think I have that under control too....it is budding out again...
My ficus elastica is growing like a weed...two years ago that was only 8 inches tall! It must have grown a foot in the last couple months. This is the purple Wandering Jew (oh how I hate that common name!) that we started from clippings a few weeks ago...seems as happy as a clam!
That is it for my flaunting this week....I can't wait to see what you share with us! What are you waiting for...flaunt yours and tour the rest!
This will be the last Fertilizer Friday of 2009. There will be no Dec 25th or Jan 1 postings...have a great holiday!!!

I posted Bloom Day on Tuesday and Should Have been here Yesterday after that, so I might not post again. Those posts have much of what is blooming here now.

All the floribunda roses have brave blooms, including the KOs and Julia Child; Gerbera daisies brave the cold and lantana montevidensis is still blooming. The greenhouse has pretties of all kinds, especially common begonias along with Christmas things like Amaryllis. The Christmas cactus is not quite ready for its photo shoot.

Wow, things are looking AMAZING! How on earth did you keep them from freezing in the crazy cold weather you just endured?

Hi Tootsie! Oh, sorry to hear you had so many little boogers in your greenhouse! Hopefully that cold cold weather will kill them off! Brrr....that's cold.
Your banana plant looks so pretty. It's amazing you grew this from seed.
Take care, Dear One and I wish you and your family a blessed Merry Christmas,
Shelia ;)

Hi Tootsie, I linked to your post. I can't join you on this one very often. I'm confused though, because it's Thursday. I scheduled it for Friday morning. Do you want me to go ahead and post it now? :)

Hugs,

HI Tootsie, Love the Wandering Jew - it's beautiful. Love the variegated leaves and the purple underneath. I've lost track of time, so I'm not sure if I'll join you this week... we'll see. Have a nice weekend

Congratulations on your banana plant. It looks very healthy and full of life. I hope that it will bloom soon. Banana plants are regarded as symbols of fertility and abundance among my Indian friends and no major festival is complete without having 2 banana tree stumps flanking main doorways. Have a blessed Christmas and may good fortune rain on you always.

Whoa, the banana plant is huge and it does look so healthy!

I never thought you'd have bug problems inside a greenhouse. Shows how much I know!

G'Day Tootsie,
Pleased to be back, last one for the year eh!
You have a banana plant growing in those temperatures. Those plants are something I would not even bother trying with in this area, let alone where you live where in the cold. You amaze me.
Merry Christmas and New Year.

I loved seeing all of this beauty in December. Sounds like you've fought a lot of battles with some of your plants this year, but the result is worth the effort. Everything looks so beautiful! laurie

The banana plant is amazing, how cool that it was started from seed!
I didn't get a chance to get a post together for today, I actually forgot it was going to be Friday today. My oldest daughter thought I had lost my mind :)

Wow Tootsie,

Your banana tree looks awesome! Your green thumb also has the ability to heal spider mite disease too! Your plants are so healthy looking...I wish I had a greenhouse, I could really use one now! Can't wait for warmer days to get here again! I didn't have anything to post this week...but wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your blog! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! Sonia/Miss Bloomers

What a gift you have to be able to grow all these beautiful plants. I had 3 asparagus ferns, I've had for 30 years.. have taken them in and out for quite some time using a 2 wheeler. Decided this year they were going to have to stay out.. can't handle it any longer..by this time they are usually dead if left outside.. we've had a lot of mornings at zero... no girl they are growing like crazy ...go figure...

I can't believe that you started your banana plant just last summer. Quite prolific I would say.

I plan to join in on Fertilizer Friday in the new year. I didn't realize that it could to be things from the summer. Cuz I have nothing growing now.

I would like to know how you treated the greenhouse to get rid of the bugs? I may have access to a greenhouse which a local nursery is not using due to bug infestation. Any tips?

Merry Christmas to you too!!!xoxoxo

Oh it does my heart good to see something green and blooming. I don't have a greenhouse so there's nothing pretty happening here...except for all the berries on my nandinas. Counting the days till spring!
