Living Out of a Suitcase?

Welcome back!  It is so nice to have you here again.   It is great to have had a little time to sit down and write a few lines to share again this week.    I have SO missed my Tootsie Time, and it is great to be slowly getting back into the swing of things.

When last we met like this, I had just finished playing with some ‘boobs’ that needed some restoration, (to see that post click HERE) and before that I was once again playing with paint to freshen up some old furniture.  (click HERE to see the fun dresser that I fixed up.

Today, I am sharing another Tootsie makeover creation.  This one is unlike any other I have done.   It is just slightly out of the comfort zone of my usual projects…this one is unique…spectacular…and just down right fun.

It started out as the most BORING and BLAND piece that I have played with in a LONG time.   I had found it a while back on a junkin’ tour and I just didn’t know what I would end up doing to it.   I just  could not settle myself with a simple paint or stain job.   This dresser NEEDED something fun to happen to it.  It needed more than a simple treatment if it was not going to end up looking like just another typical painted dresser.    I stared at it…and I mulled it over…and NOTHING seemed to click.

One day I was out in the garage doing  a little work on something else, and finally my imagination started to flood me with great ideas for this chest of drawers.   Don't you just LOVE when inspiration happens???   I know I do.   Just like that...

BOOM!!!   I HAD A PLAN!

You all know how I LOVE my antiques and vintage decor in my home.  Over the last few years we have gotten rid of most of the ‘new’ furniture in our house and replaced it with beautiful and unique pieces most of which  I have ‘touched’ in some way.   Among my favorite pieces  are steamer trunks of all shapes and sizes and old suitcases.   SO - when the inspiration  for this piece hit me, I was super excited.

A while back,  while out and about shopping, I had seen a very plain chest of drawers done up to look like a stack of vintage suitcases.   They were incredible, but they were VERY expensive.   I have also seen some other similar pieces for sale online, but never had I had the inspiration to try to make my own until today.

I got to work right away.   I sanded and filled and primed.. painted and distressed and detailed.   I rummaged around in my ‘stash’ for the right ‘jewellery’ to ‘dress’ it with.  I was SO excited to get to the finishing touches that the wait for my finish to cure seemed endless…I had stepped quite a long way out of my comfort zone with this one…I had never painted a chest of drawers to look this style…NEVER…and I was skeptical.   If it didn’t work out, I knew it wouldn’t be hard to change…but I had put a lot of work into this one and I wanted it to work.   I needed to see the image in my imagination come to life.

When I was FINALLY able to ‘dress’ this chest, and put my Tootsie spin on things…I got busy and finished it up.

I have to admit it has been a LONG time since I have been THIS happy with myself.

Everyone in my household LOVES this dresser now.   It has become one of MY favorite make- overs and since I shared it with friends and family, I have gotten a few requests (orders) for others.

Yay Me!  …. Right?   I now have the challenge of finding  the perfect place to place this piece, AND scrounging out the time to do the next ones up.   ha ha

So?   What do you think?  For me this project gave a new life to an old piece, and forever will change the phrase ‘living out of a suitcase’ just a little for me.      I am glad I decided to step out of my comfort zone and have something fun!    ha – ha.

Well guys…that’s it for me for today.

Until next time…  Happy Junkin’ !!!  ( and re-finishing!)

This is so fabulous!! What a unique, fun way to transform a pretty ugly dresser! I love the look of stacked suitcases and I finally found a place to put some on suitcase rack. Just love that look!

Thank you ladies! I am really happy with the outcome of this makeover...I was nervous...lol
The last couple of days I have been working on the dresser that has been in the garage. I thought I'd stretch my limit a little bit more and am doing something similar, but slightly more challenging. Can't wait to share.

thank you Vanessa. Again I can't take all the credit...I remember seeing an inspiration online somewhere...but for the life of me cannot remember where! If I find the link I will add it to my post. I don't like to be the girl who runs around using other people's ideas and not crediting them. I know how that feels...It happens to me all the time! :)

How Darling, this is the cutest thing you did. You are a very talented Gal. How is the heat in Canada? Maine has been very hot. That is a real clever
looking chest. Love it.

Yvonne....it has been a warm few days! Okay...it's just plain hot. Last night we had storms...which cool things off enough to sleep at least. You take care. Don't over do yourself in the heat girl! Hugs.
