What’s the MOST Outrageous Thing You’ve Ever Painted?

As many of you have probably noticed…I LOVE PAINT.   Not Chalk paint…but latex paint.   Chalk paint just doesn’t do ‘it’ for me…and I think it’s a colossal waste of time and money…so unless I find a brand that does what I want it to do…there won’t be any chalk paint posts from me.   I don’t do fads, and I think Chalk paint is just that.   This post…like most  of the others I’ve done…is a latex paint project.

Over the years you guys have seen me paint a LOT of different things…and for the most part I was sure of how the project would turn out before I even did it.   This time, however, I decided that I had nothing to lose…and I was VERY skeptical about how it would turn out…but SOMETHING had to change…so either way this project was going to get done.

Do you remember a few years back when I got my antique sofa set?   Of course you do!
In case you don’t …this is the sofa.

005b_thumb[1]
Do you remember how much I hated the color of that set, so I decided to try to dye the velvet?   Of course you do!

In case you don’t…this is her after I dyed her fabric…

056a_thumb[1]

We LOVED her new color…and I never did get around to updating the wood on it…BUT…after three full years of us using her…moving her...vacuuming her…and even steam cleaning her…the dye faded.

To read the whole post about the dye and the way I went about that project...click here.

It looked sad.   Just sad and OLD.

sofa before

This is our everyday living room furniture...we USE it.   I imagine that had it just been in a sitting room, with occasional use…it would have lasted a lot longer…but…it didn’t and so I am in the ‘mood’ to fix it up a bit again.

It was getting an update no matter if I had to take the time out to reupholster it…or not…so in MY mind…I had nothing to lose.   We all hated the way it looked at this time…and the Cowboy even suggested we toss it in the dumpster and find a different set to add to our home.  One way or another…there was going to be a much nicer view in our living room.

SOOO…the most outrageous thing I have ever painted became…my antique French Provincial sofa set.

I just could NOT look at this sad, faded view any longer.   It was at the point where we were embarrassed to even have people see it!   When the decision was made…I was determined to make my idea work no matter what…and if it didn’t…I’d either let them hit the dumpster OR reupholster them.

sofa before (2)

With nothing to lose…I hit the paint shop, chose my color…and got the girl to mix me up a can of flat latex paint.   I wanted a darker shade…so as to hide that nasty pink…and I wanted something neutral.   I chose a color called Cambridge by General Paint.   It is a dark brown with grey undertones.

I had been researching painting velvet fabric for a few days, and I saw NO posts that were successful in painting velvet…and …and saw that I needed fabric medium…or glycerine…and there was NO way I was going to go to that expense for an experiment…PLUS…living in this tiny little town, there was no way I was going to get my hot little hands on either of those…so I decided to do what I do best…and use my experience with paint…and wing it!

I made my own recipe using specific parts vinegar, water and paint, and went to work on a project that all of my research said could not successfully be done.

WHY IS IT THAT WHEN I SEE THAT OTHERS ARE SAYING SOMETHING CAN’T BE DONE…I HAVE THIS STRONG URGE TO PROVE THEM WRONG????

When I first started…I was using my mixture AND a spray bottle of water, like I had seen in the posts I read of others trying this.    I figured that if I sprayed the fabric first, it would allow the fibers to soak up the paint better…but that was not the case…all that did was create more work for me.   (which is also where I think the others that tried and failed went wrong)

Sofa during

By adding the extra water from the spray bottle…I was diluting my mixture even more than I wanted to and ended up needing to do a second coat!   So…that spray bottle got ditched..and I just went with my little wax brush and painted in a circular motion (pushing down firmly) to make sure that the paint would get between all of the fibers in the velvet.

This is the type of  brush I found the best to get right into the grain of the fabric…I borrowed this photo from the internet as I forgot to take a photo of mine.

index

It took a fair amount of time to get the entire sofa set and cushions done…but I finished it!   I then used a regular soft bristle brush to paint the wood parts of my sofa in a full strength paint in the same color!   I could have used my fabric recipe to do the wood as well…but it was faster for me to just use it full strength.

sofa in progress

I set up a fan to get it to dry faster because I was SOOO excited to see how it was going to turn out.   It felt like FOREVER before it was dry…when in reality it was only a couple of hours…but an excited Tootsie is an impatient one!

Let me tell you…it was WORTH THE WAIT!!!

33486721_10155588931517253_6646082992840114176_n

MY SOFA PROJECT TURNED OUT WONDERFUL!!!

The first couple of days, it was as you’d expect it to be…just a little stiff…but not crunchy or solid…but the more we used it, the fabric softened right up!

sofa back close up

The next weekend…I found time to finish the set…and I am absolutley amazed at the difference it made to the entire room.

We all love the new look AND feel of the fabric…and I am proud to say that velvet CAN BE PAINTED and that it won’t be crunchy and hard but instead soft!

loveseat after

My antique sofa set looks like brand new!…well almost.   I am waiting on my new foam to put into the cushions, because as you can see the old stuff is kinda tired.   That will make another huge difference.

As you can imagine…the fresh look of the furniture has prompted a bit of a makeover of the entire room…and once it’s done, I will share again…but I just could not wait to say that I did it!…and I am glad!

So…that’s it for me for today…What’s the most OUTRAGEOUS thing you’ve ever painted???

Will you try to paint YOUR living room furniture?   If you want my recipe just say the word…I’d be happy to share.

Until next time…Happy painting!!!

I Wasn’t Born in a Barn…But We Built One…

…. Well…Kinda.

Welcome back!   I am glad you stopped in to see what’s new!

I WAS going to share another room in my house that I did a little work on…but decided that it can wait.   This post is WAY more fun to share!

As you remember, my little family moved out to the country …it was one full year ago on Halloween to be exact.   I recently shared a little bit of where we live.   Click here to see what home looks like to us now.   And if you have been following Tootsie Time a while, you know we have a horse.

Cruise!

A spoiled...

ridiculous...

gentle...

13244751_10153658271767253_5975979468364555990_n

brat of a horse.

13315702_10153695269082253_1992194786561707466_n

He has a saddle, and all the things that a horse needs...but ...Well…Cruise…(that’s his name) didn’t have a house!  He does have an annoying magpie friend though...ugh.  That stupid bird hangs out on him quite often.   ugh ugh!

002ab

Not having a house to live in is NOT an option at our place.   Every pet we have is loved to bits and pieces and well, lets face it…treated pretty much like royalty and spoiled rotten.   Cruise is no exception to this rule.

Home

The previous owners of this place had horses…but they didn’t have any kind of shelter for them.   There’s a tack shed…and a garden shed…and a quad shed…but no barn.  This would NOT do!

When Cruise came to live with us, the plan was to be that before winter got to this part of the world, he would have some sort of shelter from the elements, should he need them.

Now…if it were up to me…he’d be living in the garage with the heat on and a blankie to curl up in…but the Cowboy says that is not good for him on any level…so that isn’t going to happen.  That is when the plan was struck.

We happened to have some of the second cut spruce slabs left over from the tree house that the Bickering Builders put up about a month ago…and we had some other wood sitting in storage from another project that we had done…so we decided that all we needed was another bundle of the slabs, and some screws…and we were good to go.   We like the rustic natural look of the spruce slabs…some of them still have bark on them, they are imperfect and they seem to be just charming enough to use around the yard.   We didn’t want the ‘brass and glass’ look…we wanted it to kind of blend in with the trees.

This is what we came up with.

barn

Easy…simple, and very inexpensive shelter.   It measures 16 feet by 14 feet.  Nothing fancy…but big enough to hold a couple of horses.  (hint - hint Cowboy) *)

Cruise seems to be okay with it.   He ‘helped’ us with all of the building…snoopy bugger that he is…and he’s super calm, so the sound of the chain saw and other tools didn’t even phase him.   ha-ha.

barn 1

Here he is checking out his new digs…gotta inspect every corner…

barn 2

I gave him a little grass in there to see if he’d stay…

barn3

…he did!

barn 4

He went in and out a few times… it was cute to watch him checking it all out.

barn 5

I think his winter hair makes him look all wooly and snuggly…

barn 7

Say Cheeeezzze!   Ya…I know…But I just adore him.

barn 8

So that’s the little house that my Cowboy and I made …it took us one full day to start and finish it…and we are pleased with the end result.

I might ‘cute it up’ a little bit down the line…but for now I think it will be fine the way it is…that way Cruise can get completely used to it before I go hanging decorations on it.

That’s it for me today!   Thanks again for stopping by!

Until Next Time…Happy Building!

OOH LA LA! It’s Tiffany Blue!

Hey guys!   Hope the summer has been treating you right.   I know it has been HOT HOT HOT here!   The summer holidays are just flying by!   The kids are loving their summer break…and I am realizing that this summer has been a very different one than any I have ever spent.   (that’s for another post entirely)

I have been a busy girl this past week or so…and I might have a few things to share with you in the very near future that might just have a little something to do with my new gardens out here on the acreage…but until then, you will just have to settle for another furniture make-over reveal.   To see the last few projects  that I have done you can click here…and  here…and to see the BEST one yet…click here

This is going to be a fairly short but sweet little post…as what all can a girl say about a little desk this size?
13263682_10154141321a415941_4281502675242637875_n
When this desk came to me  (yup…another junkin’ find)  it was in a sad state.   It had been used and ABUSED in a big way.

All I could think of when I started to look at it closely, was that if this was in my room as a little girl, my Mother would have strung me up by my toes and smacked me with a wooden spoon if I did something like this to my furniture!   In fact…I still have the furniture that I had when I was a little girl…It is still in good shape…and I don’t think it EVER looked near as rough as this.   It is a good thing that I rescued this…because it was going to the dump if I didn't!   It is  going to look a LOT better once I am done with it.

I had taken my oldest girl along with me when I went to town to grab some supplies for giving this little desk a make-over.   I ended up coming home with a totally different look planned for the desk than was originally on the agenda.   My teenage daughter talked me into a little bit of color….Okay…lets be honest here...a lot of color.

13349228_1015367405808225a3_1489157029_n
It really didn’t take me too long to do this peice.   The top was a simple sanding and stain…then the sanding and priming and paint on the bottom.   A bit of paint on the drawer pulls and …Badda Bing…Badda Boom…it was done!   I did a protective coat and the piece was ready to find a sweet spot to live.  My little “Busy” would really like to have it in her room…but she would like to have pretty much anything I have made in her room.   She is my biggest fan.

I am quite happy with the finished result.  I was excited to share the new look I gave this piece, so the drawers are not closed tight as it needed to cure just a little bit more.   (you get the idea)   This piece is now cute, fun and right on point with the trend right now.

I can honestly say, I have never painted anything Tiffany Blue…and I have never put baby pink handles on a piece…so it’s been a fun adventure!   I can’t wait to see where it ends up!

13349228_1015367405808225a3_1489157029_n

It really is quite a change!

Well guys…that’s it for me for today.

Until next time…  Happy Junkin’ !!!  ( and re-finishing!)

Living Out of a Suitcase?

Welcome back!  It is so nice to have you here again.   It is great to have had a little time to sit down and write a few lines to share again this week.    I have SO missed my Tootsie Time, and it is great to be slowly getting back into the swing of things.

When last we met like this, I had just finished playing with some ‘boobs’ that needed some restoration, (to see that post click HERE) and before that I was once again playing with paint to freshen up some old furniture.  (click HERE to see the fun dresser that I fixed up.

Today, I am sharing another Tootsie makeover creation.  This one is unlike any other I have done.   It is just slightly out of the comfort zone of my usual projects…this one is unique…spectacular…and just down right fun.

003a

It started out as the most BORING and BLAND piece that I have played with in a LONG time.   I had found it a while back on a junkin’ tour and I just didn’t know what I would end up doing to it.   I just  could not settle myself with a simple paint or stain job.   This dresser NEEDED something fun to happen to it.  It needed more than a simple treatment if it was not going to end up looking like just another typical painted dresser.    I stared at it…and I mulled it over…and NOTHING seemed to click.

One day I was out in the garage doing  a little work on something else, and finally my imagination started to flood me with great ideas for this chest of drawers.   Don't you just LOVE when inspiration happens???   I know I do.   Just like that...

BOOM!!!   I HAD A PLAN!

You all know how I LOVE my antiques and vintage decor in my home.  Over the last few years we have gotten rid of most of the ‘new’ furniture in our house and replaced it with beautiful and unique pieces most of which  I have ‘touched’ in some way.   Among my favorite pieces  are steamer trunks of all shapes and sizes and old suitcases.   SO - when the inspiration  for this piece hit me, I was super excited.

A while back,  while out and about shopping, I had seen a very plain chest of drawers done up to look like a stack of vintage suitcases.   They were incredible, but they were VERY expensive.   I have also seen some other similar pieces for sale online, but never had I had the inspiration to try to make my own until today.

003a

I got to work right away.   I sanded and filled and primed.. painted and distressed and detailed.   I rummaged around in my ‘stash’ for the right ‘jewellery’ to ‘dress’ it with.  I was SO excited to get to the finishing touches that the wait for my finish to cure seemed endless…I had stepped quite a long way out of my comfort zone with this one…I had never painted a chest of drawers to look this style…NEVER…and I was skeptical.   If it didn’t work out, I knew it wouldn’t be hard to change…but I had put a lot of work into this one and I wanted it to work.   I needed to see the image in my imagination come to life.

When I was FINALLY able to ‘dress’ this chest, and put my Tootsie spin on things…I got busy and finished it up.

I have to admit it has been a LONG time since I have been THIS happy with myself.

014a

Everyone in my household LOVES this dresser now.   It has become one of MY favorite make- overs and since I shared it with friends and family, I have gotten a few requests (orders) for others.

016a

Yay Me!  …. Right?   I now have the challenge of finding  the perfect place to place this piece, AND scrounging out the time to do the next ones up.   ha ha

015a

So?   What do you think?  For me this project gave a new life to an old piece, and forever will change the phrase ‘living out of a suitcase’ just a little for me.      I am glad I decided to step out of my comfort zone and have something fun!    ha – ha.

003a
015a

Well guys…that’s it for me for today.

Until next time…  Happy Junkin’ !!!  ( and re-finishing!)

Some Finishing and Re-Finishing!!

A few years back, the ugly divorce forced me and the kids to move.   In the new place, we didn’t have a garage and the house didn’t offer much along the line of storage…so I decided to just rent one.  Over the next few months, I FILLED that unit to the lips.  There were so many items for me to put into storage “until I needed or had ideas for them” that I actually could not see them all and even forgot I had some of them!

If you follow Tootsie Time, you know that we recently moved again.   We are now living out in the country on a gorgeous acreage, and are super lucky to have all kinds of space and storage buildings for us to store the ‘good stuff’ in.   About a month ago, I got all caught up on the work for my company’s business and decided to switch up the gears a little bit..take a break, and play.  So…I dug into my stash of ‘good stuff’ in the sheds and got busy.

The first piece I pulled out was this little hi-boy dresser.   She was in bad shape.   (sorry!   I forgot to take a photo of the dresser before I touched it!)   She was missing a drawer and her sides were very beat up.   I wasn’t confident she’d be fixable to perfection…but I was gonna try!  I sanded and scraped and got her all prepped for a total make over.  My cowboy built me a drawer…(I had the original drawer front...but not the rest, so he really helped me out.  (yay me!) and I settled on a ‘look’ for the piece.   After a little stain, a little paint and a couple of hours of my time…
Ta-Da!
017a

018a

020a

I didn’t have this piece posted for even 15 minutes and she was SOLD!

The next day I headed to the shed again and pulled out another piece.   This one used to be a blonde veneer with stained navy blue drawers.   (I also didn’t get a before of this one…ugh)

035a

It turned out very nicely.  Sorry about the eyesore in the mirror reflection...my garage needs a really good cleaning.   Ha-ha.

Playing in the garage felt SO good that I just went to town and cleaned my shed right out!   I repaired and re-finished all of the dressers that I had been holding onto and I loved every minute of it!   (I will share the rest of the re-done dressers in the next post…they turned out AMAZING…)

The cleaning out of that shed sparked an unprecedented purge of the other sheds, closets, drawers and garage in our home.   I think it goes without saying…There’s going to be one heck of a garage sale hosted by us this summer!

Well kids…that’s all I have to share with you today…Thanks so much for popping by.   Stay tuned…I can feel the winds of change blowing again…and you do NOT want to miss what comes next.

Until next time….Happy junkin’!

When the 80’s Called and Demanded Their UGLY Back…

Hey guys!   How the heck are ya?   I have missed you all a lot, and finally have a few minutes to sit down and share a little bit of what I have been doing around here when I am not working on …well…work!

As you know, my Cowboy and the kids and I have recently purchased a beautiful acreage.   We moved in last November and are loving our new home…well Mostly.

This house was built in the 80’s.   It is a very nice size for us and has all kinds of wonderful things about it that made us want to live here.   However…there were a few things that right off the bat we knew we were going to change.   Today…I am sharing one of those things.

MY KITCHEN.

I adore the layout of this kitchen.   Having the stove on the island is a dream!   It makes this Tootsie who generally hates to cook or bake…almost enjoy that task!  There are plenty of cabinets and drawers for what we need…and on the other side of the dining area there is a built in china cabinet.

What’s not to love!

IMG_2350a

Ya…THAT’S not to love.

The oak Cabinets have turned VERY orange…and the finish is worn, dry and in bad shape.

011a

012a

013a
014a

We talked and talked about what to do with the finish on the cabinets.   The possibilities are endless when it comes to things like this.

I am NOT a fan of the chalk paint or the other fad paint products on the market right now.   So that would not be an option.

I wanted to go classic…and keep the integrity of the wood, so I got the sander out…and took off the old orange finish.

It took HOURS and HOURS and HOURS and PAGES and PAGES and PAGES of sand paper.   It was a nasty mess!

I sanded the doors of the cupboards outside when I could…the weather was great, and I enjoyed the fresh air.  :)

13164280_10153627327872253_4857027196774298111_n

The cabinet frames and the island were done in place as I did not want to move them off the walls and floors…so I hooked my shop vac to the sander and went to town!

My oldest Daughter was in need of a project for her industrial arts class, and she decided that helping me would be a fun time.  So…I handed her some gloves and a sander and put her teenage self to work…teaching her how to do what she needed to do…and documenting all of her help.   (she did not want me to share the photos of her assisting me, so I am keeping it simple for her)

13165983_10153627328092253_5745600618793660644_n

Once we finished all the sanding…we were ready to stain.

13151467_10153627328432253_2506007069999550809_n

I didn’t really want to have a color that everyone else has…so I decided to mix up my own color and it turned out to be exactly what the Cowboy and I wanted!

Waiting for it to dry enough to do the finishing touches on felt like FOREVER.

13178958_10153627329027253_3200855622509103295_n

Once the stain was dry, I applied a coat of protective finish to it all to ensure that it would last for years.   Once that was dry…it was time to put every thing back together.

047a

Ta-Da!!!    The finish came out so great!

043a

We love the way the light plays with the colors.   At different times of the day, it takes on a bit of a different shade…sometimes light grey, sometimes darker.   Either way it looks very nice.

037a

Now…once I finished the main part of the kitchen, I turned around and decided that the built in china cabinet could NOT stay the original orange oak that it was…but we did not want it to feel like a big displaced heavy cabinet in the dining room…I had to co-ordinate…but be just a little different from the rest.

Here’s what I came up with.

027a

I did the same finish on all of the doors and drawers…but painted out the frame with the same color as the walls.   I also used that cream color inside the microwave opening in the cooking area…so it all goes together nicely.

BeFunky Collagea

It was a huge undertaking…and a challenging one to say the least…but we are very excited at the way it all came out.  It went from Dated and Worn to a more up to date shade of pretty.

BeFunky Collage

What do you think?

I know we are happy with the results…and pooped from all the work!   The clean up is almost as hard on us as the sanding!  lol

Thank you "Miss Georgie" for all your help!   I hope learning from your old Mom was fun!

That’s all I have for you today.

There is more to share from the adventures in this house…but time is of the essence and I will share again soon!

Until Next Time…Happy Decorating!
